Below we learn about oil painting portraits from photos through the work of three very talented portrait painting artists. There is definitely some disagreement amongst artists as to whether or not painting from a photograph is helpful or detrimental to your progress. Many say the best reference is a live model while others are perfectly at home with a photo reference. Not very many people have access to a live model and a photo reference is good substitute and quite suitable for learning how to paint portraits in my opinion.
