Chuck Black introduces his painting project, focusing on capturing a sunrise over the Montana Badlands. He meticulously prepared a sketch of the landscape, which he then set with a fixative, making it ready for applying acrylic paints. The initial sketch outlines the sun’s placement, potential horizon lines, and areas in the sky where color transitions will highlight the shift from sunrise’s warm hues to the upper atmosphere’s cooler tones. This preparatory stage lays a critical foundation for the painting, ensuring a clear roadmap for the detailed work ahead.
Due to an oversight with his SD card, Chuck cannot show the palette mixing process in real-time. Despite this, he comprehensively explains the color mixes he prepared beforehand. The palette includes a base of light gray modified with varying amounts of orange and red to achieve the specific shades needed for the sunrise and surrounding sky. These premixed colors are pivotal for creating the dynamic and vibrant sky that characterizes the early morning light.
Chuck uses a selection of Golden fluid acrylics and Liquitex soft body acrylics, including carbon black, titanium white, cadmium orange, cadmium red, ultramarine blue, quinacridone magenta, cad yellow, and phthalo blue (green shade). Each color plays a significant role in developing the painting’s depth and realism, from the subtle gradients in the sky to the more pronounced features of the Badlands landscape. His approach demonstrates a keen understanding of harnessing acrylic paints’ properties to achieve a lifelike representation of natural light and terrain.
Throughout the tutorial, Chuck aims to guide viewers through each step of the painting process, from the initial sketch to the final strokes that bring the sunrise to life. His detailed explanation of the materials and techniques used offers valuable insights for artists of all levels interested in landscape painting. By sharing his process, Chuck teaches the technical aspects of painting a sunrise and invites viewers to appreciate the serene beauty of the Montana Badlands.
