When working with pastels, you will more than likely create a lot of dust during the course of a painting session. Never try and blow the dust from the work surface as it can be dangerous to your lungs. Take your work outdoors and gently tap the paper or canvas to remove the dust.

I recycle all the “shavings” off pastels. I keep a fresh sheet of pastel or watercolor paper ready and stand my painting on it as I work, tapping the loose color onto the paper. At the end of a painting session I use paper tissues to rub the pastel dust evenly into the paper. It usually ends up a decent gray color. I use that paper to paint on. That way I don’t waste any pastels. If you think it needs it, you could use a fixative on the recycled pastel, but if it’s rubbed in well it doesn’t really need it.
