About Nick Warren
I’m a native of Yorkshire, England and live there to this day, still inspired by its grandeur and wealth of different landscapes. I originally trained in graphics and worked as a designer eventually starting my own business. I began using oil paints twenty years ago, teaching myself how to use them through trial and error, reading every manual I could find and picking the brains of more experienced artists I met through art societies and life classes. I still tend to paint like a designer rather than a fine artist. Around seven or eight years ago I began working mainly in oils and used my background and contacts to print greeting cards and the like and with my wife’s help and guidance built up a network of clients. I began taking commissions most of which came about through marketing my printed works and utilising local directories, an underused resource in the age of the internet.
At the end of 2009 I started a website http://www.from-sketch-to-oil-painting.com/ providing free tutorials in drawing and painting. Soon after I was involved in an accident, damaging my shoulder, wrist and hand. This has inevitably slowed me down and I only take on two commissions a year while managing my greeting card business. However, this has provided me with the opportunity to use the time I would have previously spent painting on developing my site.
My hope for my site is that it will develop into a community of artists of all abilities. That some will pick up the pencil and paintbrush for the first time, others will further enhance their art skills and that the accomplished among us will teach us all how to be better artists.
