Acrylic Painting Lesson – Keeping it Loose

Here is a free acrylic painting lesson video created by Artist Robert Joyner.

In the beginning of the video, Robert talks about an equation he likes to apply to his painting that I found very interesting. Its a 2:1 equation with 2 parts believable and 1 part imperfect.  In Roberts opinion, which I tend to agree with, its the imperfections that make a painting beautiful.

Robert likes to keep his compositions simple and his brushwork loose and abstract which makes for some very interesting paintings.  In this particular lesson, his composition is two fishing boats that are docked in downtown Newport News.

The biggest lesson I took away from this video is to not take my painting too seriously.  I know that many times I will become intimidated by a particular painting I am working on.  I will worry that it may not come out the way I anticipated and its those worries that  ultimately ruin the finished product.  I think its best to just relax and let go as Robert does in this video. And if it doesn’t come out as good as you had hoped, then put it in the “reject” pile like Robert mentions in the video and paint over it!   What a great concept.

Plein Air Painting Demo in Acrylics by Donald Neff

Artist Statement

“I paint the places I love to be. I paint the freshness of eternal nature, icy lucid streams, thunderous waterfalls, and soaring granite crests over silent lakes. I paint the descriptions of John Muir, the echoes of Ansel Adams, the American West of Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran. I paint luminosity filtering through the landscape, reaching to the foundation of a stream, bouncing off rocks, and illuminating the shadows.

Using oil and acrylic, painting realistically is merely my means to an end. I want the viewer to connect with the places I love to be. I hope the observer will want to walk right into my painting and maybe even drop a line in the water to catch a trout.

My published works include both “plein air” and studio paintings, which helps me translate the dynamic experience of the moment and communicate in a more personal way of what I am trying to say..”

That was Fall, 2002 and she has not let the brushes dry since.

Blick Art Lesson – Exciting Acrylic Painting Technique

The following is an acrylic painting technique that you probably have not seen before. I never did until today. This is a very interesting approach to working with acrylic paint.

In the video below, a representative of Blick Art Materials takes advantage of the strong, flexible, quick drying properties of acrylic paint to create some very interesting works of art.

She first lays out a layer of acrylic paint over some parchment paper. It is allowed to dry for 48hrs.It is then easily peeled from the parchment paper, leaving you with a flexible piece of dried paint from which to work from.

From this point, the possibilities are endless as you will see after watching the video below. Everything from mosaics to jewelry can be created. And with the addition of various mediums, even more interesting things can be done. Pretty cool stuff! Enjoy!
