How to Get Started in Encaustic Painting

Getting Started in Encaustic Painting With Artist Kathryn Bevier

Below is an excellent video from artist Kathryn Bevier on how to get started in Encaustic Painting.  She discusses all of her favorite tools and supplies that she uses and exactly what you will need to get started.

I only just started learning about this very interesting medium after viewing the art work of artist Jasper Johns at the Museum of Modern Art not too long ago.

Encaustic Painting (also known as Hot Wax Painting) is a very unique painting medium that uses heated wax combined with pigments. This mixture is then applied to certain supports such as wood or canvas. There are different ways to prepare an encaustic medium.  One method is to simply add colored pigments to a heated beeswax. Another is to purchase ready made encaustic paints that are usually available in tins or blocks.

One popular manufacturer of Encaustic paints is a company called Enkaustikos.  They make tins of encaustic paint called “Hot Cakes”. These paints are professional encaustic paints that come in a convenient reusable metal tin and are available in a variety of colors.  These are the paints that Kathryn uses in the video lesson below.  If you are interested in purchasing these paints, follow this link to buy them from Dick Blick Art Materials.  Enjoy the video!
