Mixed Media Art Demonstration using Pan Pastels and Ranger’s Distress Ink
About Katherine
My name is Katherine Herriman and I grew up in a small fishing town in Victoria, Australia (down the bottom), called Lakes Entrance. After finishing school, I moved to Melbourne to study psychology and social work. I chose to work with asylum seekers and refugee youth, helping them settle into their life in Australia. It was around this time I found my way back to making art. I can’t remember exactly when or why this happened. Although in hind-sight, at that time in my life there was more space, and more quiet, and more safety, than there had been in a long time. There were just less things getting in the way, so it naturally bubbled up to the surface ever so casually.
After a couple of years working as a social worker, in June 2009 I moved to Europe with my partner. We bought a motorhome, called her Nettle, and drove. We stop driving every now and then so I can draw and paint and my partner can pursue his passion, programming. With this life change, there is more space and quiet in my life than there ever has been. Audacious dreams began to tentatively emerge. I felt unsure about their right to exist and didn’t give myself permission to think them too much at first and yet they were there. They grow a bit bolder with every new discovery of other women who are already doing it. Women with businesses, who design and create and paint! I yearn to be one of them! I’m working towards this goal.
We’re still travelling but we’re beginning to dream of home, and nesting, and the life that’s waiting for us back in Australia. Instead of longing for quaint mediaeval European towns, my heart goes thump when I think of long dinners with friends, buying a house and making it a home, and regular trips to the library. We’ve reached the tipping point of our travels and are coming out the other end.

How to Draw an Oak Tree Step by Step
About Vincent Whitehead
My life has been influenced over the years by many things. First is my fundamental belief in God and second my family and the rural up-bringing that I have had. These two basic values have guided me and given me a love for nature, history, and the country life style.
I have always loved to draw and paint but, in 1996, I decided that it was more than just a hobby for me. I was not happy with the occasional sketch or quick scribble. I began seriously considering the world around me and then working out the God given talent toward a perfecting of a personal style so that I could render the scenes that I so dearly love. It is that perfecting process that has guided me to where I am now. No, I have not arrived. Nor have I attained perfection. On the contrary, I believe my journey has merely served to push me on toward the mark. It has given me feelings of accomplishment and greatened my respect for God’s creation.

Pencil Shading Techniques – How to Shade a Drawing Using Pointillism
About Miranda
My work fits into two very different and unrelated categories: realism and abstract. Each style allows me to challenge different parts of my personality. Drawing realistically indulges the side of me that loves detail and is a perfectionist. It challenges me technically and I am always pushing to create more accurate drawings. The abstract works reflect my interest in colour and form. I am able to work loosely and fluidly, reacting to the painting as I go. It is sometimes a relief to shift from the tight discipline of realistic drawing to this type of work, but it can be equally relieving to go from these open-ended paintings to getting lost in the details of a drawing.
A very important part of drawing realistically is shading: the variation in value from shadows to highlights that describe the shape of something. By improving your shading, you can greatly improve the quality of your drawings. Shading isn’t difficult to learn, but it does take some practice. You can learn how to make your drawings more realistic by understanding light, controlling your pencil, and blending.

Pen and Ink Drawing Demonstration by Mike Budden
About the Artist
Hello , my full name is Michael William Budden. I was born in Gosport, Hampshire, England in 1943. There were air raids, bombs being dropped all over the place. Entire streets were being destroyed while we huddled together with our brave mother in the air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden. My father was in the Royal Navy. There were 13,000 homes in Gosport at the time, and according to the Gosport records 12,253 had bomb damage or were destroyed and this didn’t include broken windows etc. The Naval and Military presence is the reason why Portsmouth and Gosport was hit so badly. It was this scenario that was to become my “playground”.
The earliest recollection I have in drawing was using a piece of chalk on a roof slate at the age of five. There was no paper in those days for children to draw silly pictures on. Everything was rationed. Wooden framed slate was used in school for writing on and it was not until the age of seven that I had the pleasure of writing in an exercise book at school. This could not be used for drawing though. Eventually notepads etc appeared in the shops and my doodling really took off. Having no one to teach me properly was a problem and my school had little or no interest in art. So, I had to go it alone and do my own thing and I have done ever since.
I am married to Sandra and have twins called Christopher and Mikala.
