Artist Spotlite – Valerie Sasaki

Artist: Valerie Sasaki

Location: Stockton California

Dimensions: 16×20

Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Comments From The Artist: I am a grandmother of 4. I started painting about 5 years ago. I am totally self taught. I painted this a couple of years ago, but I believe it is one of my best.  I know absolutely nothing about sailing, so it is not an exact replica of any ship, just my imagination.

Love the painting of the ship – wonderful colours and who cares if it’s not a ‘real’ ship – it conveys the romance of the age of sail.

Wow how awesome you are not only a great artist but also a great visionary I feel like sitting down and writing a story to go with this dreamy ship

    Hi Valerie,
    Good work.
You may improve upon waves, but rest is fine.

If that is from your imagination it is amazing – the detail on the galleon is great. I’ve painting one or two and I meticulously copied every detail to get the feel of the ship – so I think what you have created is just ’spot on’. Well done.

I loved the painting – atmosphere full of romance and I actually looked at the painting again, searching for pirates in the ship. The birds too are beautiful – wish I were so talented.

    Hi Valerie,

You have created a very nice feeling of the sea and one could put a nice story to this painting!

I have a few comments I would like to make. The color that you used is good, but having some of the blue in the ship would tie the painting together. Also have the bright sun in the sky closer to the ship would draw attention to the ship and away from the side of the painting.

The placement of the ship is directly in the middle of the canvas. Placing the ship over to the right of the canvas, giving it more room to travel to the left side of the painting would be a bit more interesting composition, giving unequal space on each side.

Also if some of the “wave shapes” could take more of a bite out of the ship “shape” it would anchor the ship in the water a bit more.

Nicely done from your imagination! keep painting! Thank you for sharing with us!

    Ingrid ;-)

I like how in the vast ocean there’s only this ship. And this ship in this picture frame is well attracted from the eye. The waves are crashing up on it so the only thing to do is look at it. Great work. Colors..always great for the sky.

I Love this picture it has movement and
a calmness about it which I feel is brought about by the colour
    that you have used.

you have a very particular style, its great, and produce something
like this from the mind without much knowledge of boats is a gift.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. My husband is afraid I won’t be able to get my head through our door. This is the first time I’ve put my work in public, and as Ralph can tell you I’ve been really nervous about it. But you all have made me feel great about showing my paintings. Special Thanks to Ralph who calmed my nerves before he posted my ship. and to Ingrid, Thank you for the comments you gave me things to think about. I really loved your website, you do beautiful work . This has been a great experience.

    Hi Valerie,

Thank you for your nice comments about my work. My students teach me and help me become a better artist!

Paul Gauguin said, “It is better to paint from memory, for thus your work will be your own.” You see, you are on the right track! Keep painting! Just remember that YOUR BEST TEACHER will be the last work before a new one is begun!

I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.

    Ingrid ;-)
