Artist Spotlite – Shirley Flinn

Artist: Shirley Flinn

Location: Lacombe, Alberta.

Dimensions: 16×20

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Website: www.shirleyflinn.com

Comments By The Artist: I was really drawn to this image, I saw it on a horse rescue calendar. I contacted the publisher of the calendar and got the name of the owner of the image, and received permission to paint it.  I changed the background, and added color to the horses coat and repositioned the horse on the canvas.

I really like the colours on this painting and after having seeing your other work on your website I can see you`re a very talented painter. It`s isn`t easy to capture the finer points of animals, especially in motion. Thank you for showing us your excellent art!

Those block of color shapes within the horse are really neat. It works, well. I can’t give any constructive criticism, again, because i can’t paint in oils. The composition of horse placed within the space given adds to the motion of the horse. Very nice job.

    Hi Shirley,
This horse is beautifully painted and your use of color and the variety of edges are quite nice, showing action!

I would like to offer a couple of suggestions. The shadow shape could be a lighter value and not so dark and solid, especially going off into the corner of your picture frame. Don’t let the shadows “steel the show”!

The other suggestion would be to change, ever so slightly, the right side of the horse as we are looking at it. The negative space against this side of the horse almost forms a straight line in the middle of the painting. A slight turn of the head of the horse into this large negative space on the right side of the painting would draw attention to the face of the horse and make for a more interesting shape in that very important part of the painting!

Keep painting, keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing with all of us!

    Ingrid ;-)

Fabulous, you’ve captured everything, anatomically, character, definition. I like the way you kept the background to a minimum making the whole focus on the horse.

    Shirley,
The one thing that I thought when I saw your horse was the wonderful sense of Movement. Then I read some of the other comments truly the horse moves me. The shadows I think give the piece a mysterious look.
    Thanks for sharing Great Work
