Artist Name: Shirish Deshpande
Location: Belgaum, India
Title: “Invocation”
Medium: Color Ball pens and Yellow pencil
Support: Hard Board
Dimensions: 12 inches X 12 inches
Comments from the Artist: I recently discovered ball pen as my art medium. I build up colors by cross hatching method. I find this very interesting and exciting as every line has to be the final one. No correction possible thereafter. I would like to have your valuable comments on my work. Thanks.

Good colors, love the rock shapes!! Nicely done!

That is an absolutely fabulous technique you are developing.
I would recommend you focus more on your tiny figure –
not necessarily for it to become entirely “figurative” in its particulars,
but it could be more stylistically integrated with the rest of your drawing — even by way of a tiny shadow of its own of some sort.
Love to see more!

I see an immense talent here so that we can feel a spiritual message. Like: we are taking part of the creation.

Love the colours, the contrasts and shadows, THe picture is reallly great- I would not have thought that ball point pends would give you this type of look.

This is excellent! I can see the light, energy of the elements and the feeling of being on top of the world.. The rocks give it realism and the sky an abstract feel. Wish I was as talented..

Very neat. I love the texture and 3D feel of your art.
Jayne Cummins on Thu, 5th Mar 2009 6:59 pm
My initial response was ‘Wow” – then I saw the medium you have used, something I would never have thought could make such an outstanding picture. I just love the rocks and then the perspective – the small man with his arms raised to the heavens.
Well done.

What an atmospheric and meaningful picture, one that almost everyone can reate to. Nice colour usage that gives the impression of space.

Dear Deshpande,
Excellent job.
Wonderful control on hatching.
Only two things in the composition are pinching me.
1. The pyramid like stone in the right bottom side is disturbing the naturalness of other shapes.
2. The unhatched rocks on the left hand bottom side create a feeling that the work is yet to be completed, or a crumpled paper is laying there.
Finally, I feel the figure is not necessary in the composition. But that is my feeling. Any way, this is a work with great patience.

Wonderful ! You are really innovative. No one would have thought of Ball pen as medium. Simply great. The perspective the picture gives is excellent.

I love this, the rocks made me think of paper which brings up all kinds of re-interpretations for me. I love also climbing on rocks and feeling on top of the world but such a small part of the great natural world at the same time-something I see in your picture. For me, the figure ties it all in and puts me in the picture.
I think the texture you create with the pens adds a texture that’s inviting and draws you in – and lovely subtle colours too.
The pyramid is a little at odds but I thought perhaps it could be the figure’s tent nestled safely among the rocks…
lovely work

Dear Shirish Deshpande,
You have 3-4D down pat. Keep on doing your art work. I do
care about how other people are doing and how well. It takes
all of us to make a beautiful world and you have done that
very well. Your ink painting expesses what our self worth is about.
I can feel what you are expressing in your painting.
Don’t ever quit. I had one of my paintings published on the cover,
of my book. yours is better then mine. You should consider,
having your work published in a book. You are that good!

I love your picture it is subtle yet it speaks volumes. I particularly loved the look of the rocks looking almost like crumpled paper it gave the piece a very surreal feeling

Amazing work..the details add depth to the painting. I just love the tiny figure..subtle yet somehow it forces us to focus our entire attention to it..i dont think any changes should be made to the figure.it is depicting the mood perfectly..and yes.. beautiful rocks..thanks for displaying this amazing piece of creation..it was a great food to the eyes.

Hi Shirish,
What a lovely creation you have produced! The overall feeling of “Invocation” is very moving. Your use of the rock shapes lead us gracefully through the lower half of the painting to the figure with hands raised towards the sky. The lost edges of the shapes in the upper part of your painting add to the mystery of your work. Your use of warm and cool grays in this work, with the cool grays dominating, is an excellent way to unify the work, along with the wonderful texture you have created using the ballpoint pen!
GREAT emotion! Great little painting!
Keep up the very good work!
Ingrid
