Title: “A Moment In Time”
Dimensions: 34×34
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Randall’s Comments: I saw this seen at Va. Bch., my hometown, snapped a pic, and went directly to my studio and sketched it out. After re-sketching several times, I finally got all the proportions just right, and layered in the whole scene in this format: top to bottom and back to front. I am really pleased with my result. I am also the website creator and maintainer for the Chesapeake Bay Art Association, a club of around 60 artist members in Norfolk, Va. Wonderful capture, Randall! I feel as if I’m sitting right on the beach! I can feel the “fun” !

What a great painting…love it love it love it. I’m addicted to the ocean, always have been – so any painting with it in there just really moves me. This is awesome…thanks so much for sharing. I wish you would have submitted something for the poster and program cover-that would have been so hot!!! You are very blessed with talent.
Lynn Marlowe on Tue, 29th Jul 2008 10:39 pm
Like the way the waves show on the water. Realistic.
Deborah Stinson on Tue, 29th Jul 2008 10:48 pm
I used to live there and miss it very much. You captured a moment at the beach beautifully. Makes me want to go swimming too!
Wayne Cooper on Tue, 29th Jul 2008 10:51 pm
WOW!!!!!….Now if that doesn’t say summer….what does?
Excellent work….skin tones are perfect and the overall look is fantastic.
it might be the photography but the horizon line looks slightly curved as if it were viewed through a fisheye lens….otherwise…..absolutely lovely!!!
susan on Tue, 29th Jul 2008 11:10 pm
Nice scene. I seem to want to see more sky in my mind for some reason.

I really like this. I am frustrated with acrylic, and just really admire your skin tones and your water patterns. It’s great.
Norman F. Simms on Tue, 29th Jul 2008 11:55 pm
Hello Randall
I love this painting. The detail and various level separations in the water are wonderful. You have done a great job in capturing this scene. The only thing that I would change is that I would overlap one of the females and stagger the straight line that the three were in. This would force the view to move their eyes across and up and down the painting creating energy. This will bring the attention to the three children and less dominates on the water.
Nice work, love it.

Very nice sketch that not only captures “the moment” but reflects it beautifully in the way you’ve rendered it in the water. Almost like a picture within a picture or a thought within a thought – a nice metaphor in art..
Kay on Wed, 30th Jul 2008 1:49 am
Fabulous composition and the colors are beautiful!

Wow! Randal I love your piece I took a closer look at it on your website and I was so impressed with the texture of the water. Textured art is one of my passions and seeing the texture of your piece made me want to reach out and touch it. The light and the happy feeling conveyed is also another reason this painting touched me. I feel that if art is not able to touch the heart than something is missing. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Randall,
All I have to say is WOW. It is really a great painting. You captured a playfull exciting time, and I’m sure you’ve brought back a lot of great memories for a lot of people. Your painting made me smile. The water is beautiful!! Thanks
Anne-Lise on Wed, 30th Jul 2008 7:28 am
I love the way in which your water is so clearly different depths.
However, the horizon troubles me a little. I live on the east coast of South Africa and although the horizon certainly does look slightly rounded when a large area is viewed, I wonder if it would be quite so dramatic when such a narrow area is viewed.
The little girls are awesome – the movement is so there.
Gretchen M. on Wed, 30th Jul 2008 8:46 am
Such a happy painting. I really like it. The figures are
really good, and I can almost feel the splash of the water.
I went to your web site to see your other paintings. I really love
the one with the pelican.

Good flesh tones. Variety of shades.
Pat on Wed, 30th Jul 2008 1:41 pm
Very nice colors and the depth is great. Really looks like I can walk right into the water. Fine Job.
Francisco Salvado on Wed, 30th Jul 2008 8:37 pm
I like the movement of the water, the warm of the colours in the sunny beach and the shadows on the wetted sand. But I feel that the view of the sea lacks some deepness.
Kay Price on Wed, 30th Jul 2008 11:45 pm
WOW! Wonderful painting!! Reminds me of when I was a child with my two cousins down at the ocean!!!! Great job!!!!
Ahnya on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 6:06 am
I can feel the excitement and awe of the children in the picture. Maybe the sky, the horizon is just a tad too dark or something. I love the colors of the water. Exhilarating!
Amanda on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 6:20 am
This reminds me of holidays with my two sisters. An emotive painting, lovely colours and really well done with the figures.

Amazing waves … very realistic…I don’t like the coulor you used for the girl’s skin..
Randall Jordan on Thu, 31st Jul 2008 2:43 pm
Thank-you all for your critiques and kind words! Often movement and realism in water seems to present the most difficult challenge in waterscapes, making this painting all that much more satisfying. The skyline is not as curved as it appears, my amatuerish photography can be thanked for that(I have a hard time avoiding the “fish-eye” effect when photoin’ large pieces). The hardest part of this painting was the girl’s hands and fingers. Innocence and pure awe and wonderment are revealed thru their movement and position. I must have re-drawn them 4-5 times, before I thought I had achieved that effect. If any of you artists have websites, sign my guestbook and send me your link in the message space, and I’ll link yours to mine, I only ask you to do the same for me! Your artist friend,….Randall Jordan.

Hi Randall, I am not an ocean person only a bushy, but your painting bought back memories of my childhood at the beach.
I love it, thank you for showing your work.
Thank you also Ralph for enabling us to have this wonderful site.

Randall – you have certainly captured the moment, a little excitement but also a little fear. The little girls are a delight and the reflections excellent. Well done.

what a delightful moment, and you captured it very well. I feel their excitement. I can almost hear the waves and the wind. Thanks for this moment in time!

Lovely painting..very natural.
Ingrid on Thu, 14th Aug 2008 6:51 pm
Hi Randall,
You have captured the sound and excitement felt at the beach in this painting! You did a great job capturing the water and all of the movement.
Just a thought about the composition…..I agree with Norman Simms that a stronger composition would be had if two of the girls could be connected, maybe holding hands, and the other girl by herself. There is equal distance between each girl and by connecting two of them it would create more interest in the negative space. One other thought would be to maybe not have so much wave action so that we can see more of the girls.
I put my finger over the blue sky and ocean shape in the upper part of your painting, to block it out. Do you think that this shape is necessary? I think that this painting is quite powerful without that dark blue shape! Just a thought!
Very nice work and great EMOTION! Thanks for sharing!
Ingrid
