Comments From The Artist: My first love is drawing people and/or pet portraits in charcoal…I welcome commissions and enjoy the reactions of clients… I love to paint landscapes (and the likes) in acrylics on a variety of items and surfaces (canvas, rocks, leaves, seashells etc…) I anticipate challenges big or small!
Recently, I’ve started to experiment with soft pastels, which I like very much… My work space is my cozy Studio/Shop which is my haven. I am self taught and also enjoy teaching painting.

Nicole I am also am a self taught artist and I am always impressed by the diversity that I see from those who are self taught as they usually are those who experiment more with different mediums. I love your charcoal drawing it has such a soft feel to it. You area very gifted portraiture. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Nicole,
You have created a lovely drawing of “Zindy” in charcoal filled with beautiful expression in those eyes!
There are just a few comments I would like to make. As I look at Zindy, the eye to the left seems a bit larger and higher on the face. Maybe by having the edges of that eye lost as they go behind the hair would also create more mystery. Other areas where I would lose edges are: near the top left of the drawing where the hairline meets the forehead as it goes up off the page, the right corner of the mouth as it turns away from us, and the lower right area where the chin meets the neck. This negative dark area below the chin forms a dark triangle shape that is distracting from the beautiful work you did on the face. Lost edges create an illusion of volume and help to make areas of the head recede as they turn away from the viewer.
The nose seems to be a bit twisted, but maybe this because of the left eye’s position.
You have a wonderful expressive style! Keep practicing those drawing skills and keep creating!
Thank you for sharing with us!

Yes, the one eye looks a bit bigger but I have met people who are beautiful due to their imperfections. Wonderful job!

Hello Nicole,
Very Nice! Zindy’s eyes feel like they are looking into my soul.
With the hair windswept it gives the picture movement which I think added great interest verses just a portrait style.
Thank you for sharing

Great hair, nice detail in the eyes. I’m just beginning to experiment with portraits and it makes me realize how unique individuals really are. One slight misstep in a shape or a shadow, an errant brushstroke and you can change your subject into another person. I believe the best capture the look and the soul of the model. thanks for exposing yourself to our comments and critiques.
