Artist: Manjula Singh
Location: Delhi, India
Title: Orchha Woman
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 24″x18″

Comments from the Artist: This is my favourite and 2nd oil painting. It is based on a photograph (which I took myself) of a woman labourer working on the repair of an old palace in Orchha in the state of MP, India. I wanted to capture the dignity of the woman.

You did very well with your rendition of this woman. The only thing that I thought could have been toned down a bit was her lips adding a bit of color to them, her eyes and her right hand. But that is only my opinion. I really do love the painting. I am no expert so take the comment light. Thanks for sharing it is truly magnificent.!

I think you have captured the mood and feel of the subject really well. I like the background of the buildings, just the right amount of details so as not to detract from the woman. I love the way you have captured the detail of the clothing, the folds, etc. all well done. I would have liked to see more highlights and contrasts in the woman’s face just to give it greater depth. Otherwise well done.

You can feel the environment and see her thoughts, well done, maybe only try a little more contrast and perhaps use a fan brush to blend the background so it appears slightly out of focus, this would give the subject more exposure to the viewer without background distraction. otherwise excellent work, I like it.

Hi Manjula,
I am back from a trip to Peru, trekking through the Amazon, chasing Morpho Blue butterflies and walking the canopy in the jungle treetops; hiking the ancient Inca Trail, climbing Machu Pichu; exploring the ancient Inca ruins of Pisac and Cusco; and checking out the sights of Lima. Therefore I have been absent from this sight!
You have captured the character and dignity of this woman! Great job! I also think that you did a great job on the background! If you would add more depth (contrast) to the woman, especially in the bowl and cloth on her head, and lose some of those hard edges in the clothing to create dimension, she would have more interest and STAND OUT MORE! A variety of edges would give interest to the figure and make her stand out even more. A little more value variety within the face, color in the lips, and check that lower hand. Maybe even eliminate it from the painting.
This is a job well done for your second oil painting! Keep
looking at those shapes, keep painting, and thank you for sharing with us!
