Comments From the Artist: Thank you for writing your blog and sending out information and demos. It is so helpful to find new ideas and techniques in my inbox. I really appreciate all you do for the artists out there. I usually work in both oils and pastels and particularly enjoy plein air painting (usually in oils).
This one is in soft pastels on homemade sanded paper. It is 9.5″ x 10.75″ and was painted on July 12th this year from a photo I took last year at Lake Pueblo in Colorado. I’d love to hear what you think of it. I’m planning on entering it a local pastel society’s annual competition next month. So keep your fingers crossed for me.

Hi Jane
Love your painting, the clouds are gorgeous and the reflections too in the water. I’m fairly new to pastel painting and am on the local pastel artists committee. We recently had an exhibition where I sold a painting – so be encouraged. I’m just trialling some Panpastels – they are very soft and easy to apply over large areas – but I think the stick pastels will be best for detail work. Pastel is a lovely medium to work with isn’t it.
All the best
Jayne

This painting is beautiful. I would never have guessed this was pastel. I also love the clouds and the color of the sky. Great job.

your clouds remind me of cotton candy which is a good thing it brings good thoughts to mind. You’ll do well I’m sure in the competition. Kudos

Hi Jane,
I am back from traveling throughout Peru, exploring the Amazon and the canopy walkway through the jungle treetops, hiking the ancient Inca Trail, climbing Machu Pichu, exploring the ruins of Cusco and Pisco, and checking out the sights in Lima. Therefore, I am a little late with my critiques on this sight.
Your painting evokes a wonderful sense of PEACE! Your division of space is great and the low horizon gives importance to that wonderful sky.
What I would do differently if this were my painting, would be to add a bit more of that red color to the bank on the right side, so that the painting does not appear to be weighted on the left side. There are two bushes on the left side, and I am sure that they also appear in your reference. I would put another smaller bush down lower in between those two bushes to make an odd number. Maybe also have the third bush closer to the bush on the right of the two.
You did a fabulous job with the clouds and sky! I wish you all of the BEST in the annual competition! Keep studying those SHAPES and keep painting! Thank you for sharing with all of us!
