Artist: Helen Guek Yee Mei
Comments From The Artist: Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Helen Guek Yee Mei. I have been working as a decoration artist, designer, full time artist and currently also teaching in one of the local institutions. Knowing how to paint is not always equal to knowing how to let others know how to do so, I’m still learning how to teach and deliver my knowledge and techniques, thanks to Creative Spotlite, I always get inspiration and good reference.
I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Art from Victoria College of Arts, (VCA) The University of Melbourne, Australia. Besides that I am a practicing artist as well, I held several solo and group exhibitions in and outside of Malaysia including as a Malaysia representative for Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh 2001; “Philip Morris Malaysia Art Awards” Honorable Mention, National Art Gallery, Malaysia, and awarded with “The Strover Award for Excellence”, Australia.

Helen I love the little smirk on your subjects face. You didn’t say what medium you are using is it oil pastel or acrylic, oil? Could be any one. Please let us know if possible.

Hi Helen,
I always tell my students that one wants to keep the viewer looking as long as possible, in one’s paintings. You do this! You have a unique personal way of expressing yourself with charming results.
On a personal note I have one suggestion. You did such a nice job with that young man I want to see HIM! I think that your background color is a bit bright for BACKGROUND. It competes with the portrait. Maybe by adding some of that red used in the hair and some of the dark used in the glasses to the background, it could become a bit more subdued in color, which would help us see the portrait without conflict. This would also connect the background to the portrait!
I REALLY like your style and the charming expression you captured in this painting! Keep painting and thank you for sharing this piece with us!
