Very interesting angle, Great shading, good colors, It makes me wonder what you are looking at. Self portraits are so hard, as we rarely see ourselves as others do. Great work!

Hi
Only you can know if this is a true likeness – I tried once to do a sketch of myself by looking in the mirror – trouble was every time I looked down at the paper – I had nothing to look at – so it wasn’t very good.
Having said that I think you have captured character and realism, well done.

Picture seems well done. Especially like the eyes and skin color except the neck needs more blending maybe. Is it supposed to be raining? Well done.

David, I’m speechless! My first reaction as I scrolled down was ” o.k. here’s the photo, now where’s the painting?” Very nice.
David, I love the self portrait. You picked such an interesting angle making the composition very compelling. There’s plenty of detail but it’s still fresh with bold brushwork. I really like it, it’s so expressive. I also like that you didn’t overwork the background (something I recognize as a problem in most of my work). If you ever give any workshops in Texas let me know.

Wow impressive. Looks like you got a lot on your mind. So many choices and hope shining through. Looks like the past is behind and you are seeing the way through. Good luck. Really liked your painting
Self portraits are a challenge and you did a great job with this one! I love the angle of you looking up, making us think “a little” about this painting!
I have a few comments to make.
Compositionally speaking, I would have liked a little less negative space maybe on either side of your face. Cropping the left side a little would not have your face in the center of the canvas and give more importance to your face and more interest to the negative space around your face.
The bridge of your nose seems to “come forward” too much, and by softening the area where the light meets the dark and putting a little darker value where the bridge of the nose is, would set this area back farther on your face.
The left corner of your mouth (as I am looking at it) also seems to come forward. By softening this area and by losing that top lip line, the corner would set farther back as it does so nicely on the right side.
You did a BEAUTIFUL job with the eyes and in the overall handling of the paint! GREAT job on a difficult subject!
Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Happy painting!
Ingrid
