Location: Big Island of Hawaii

Title: “Hawaii’s Red Road Sunrise”

Dimensions: 16×20

Medium: Oil on Birch Panel

Comments From The Artist: This Impressionist Hawaii Tropical landscape is of a rural red cinder road on the East side of the Big Island of Hawaii….. Life here is very dramatic with amazing sunrises, torrential rain, then puffy multicolored clouds drifting lazily by.  At sunset there can be turquoise water, teal and ultramarine skies with violet, scarlet and blazing yellow clouds, framed with swaying coconut palms.  This road is a true Zen experience with a canopy of mango, mahogany and waving coconut trees , pounding surf and salt water scents.  Life is grand living here just 10 miles from where lava is pouring into the ocean, creating a steam cloud that billows thousands of feet into the air.   There is a true connection with the ancient lives and current experience of all things nature.  The cycles are very present here from full moons, clouds, waves, tides.   Sunrises and sunsets are celebrated every day.

Well done - haven’t heard of a painting on birch panel before - was it on a sawn and planed tree trunk or manufactured hard wood? Either way a delightful picture, really warm and inviting.

Well composed, well balanced and wondeful, lively colour, terrific!

I really liked the use of red in the shadows. Although the road leads you into the painting, maybe more of a S curve might be more interesting, and the tunnel formed by leaves could have used a touch of the same red as in the forground.
It’s lovely, reminds me of my trip to Hawaii.

This is wonderful love the color and the impressionistic feel that takes me there into the picture

Hawaii is already impressionistic-esque but the impression on the birch wood panel is definitely impressing, haha. I do agree with Shirley that an S Curve would be more delightful to look at but it seems the bow in the road is almost pushing the palm trees out into the ocean. I like that.

Intense, vivid and warm. The choice of colours is harmonic and catches our attention. I like it very much.

    Hi Dan,

GREAT use of color! I LOVE your state and have visited various times, each time with awe! You have captured the magic of Hawaii!

I have a couple of comments. I do like the road along side of the water as it is. What I think seems to be the problem is the dark line along the left side of the road. It draws attention to that area, bringing the road up (vertical) rather than sitting back due to distance. Also maybe have the tunnel not so defined with the dark around the tunnel shape……maybe more muted and close in value. This would push those shapes back into the distance.

The other comment I would like to make is not to have the shadows of the palm trees so defined in value and hard edges. This would allow them to follow the contour of the ground surface and be a part of that surface.

The red on the left side of the road as one enters the painting should be a bit wider. The shape as it is now distorts the road shape.

I LOVE your vibrant use of color. This is HAWAII!

Thank you for sharing with us! Keep painting!

    Ingrid ;-)

Love how that warmth pops through and seems to bring the whole scene alive.
