Is this off the coast of Newfoundland Allison ?? I have never heard of Blackhead….
Your ‘blues’ are very vivid and the picture is totally different then any other painting that I have seen
Good for you that you have nerve to paint something so real and out of the ordinary
    keep up the good work

On this very hot August day, I felt the cold from you painting.
You caught the ice, it’s reflection and depth beautifully.
    Good Work!

    Allison,
I really like the same color scheme you kept throughout the painting. For example the grays in the water with the rock shield. Made me realize how much I have to see in my lifetime.
    Good work!

Very well done, you have been brave, and it has worked, it looks very real as this type of picture with an iceburg in the foreground and the hills in the background could have been so easily made to look false.
Good luck for your work in the future, it has made me want to come out of my comfort zone of animals and flowers.

    Hi Allison,
This painting is so “refreshing” that is the one word that comes to my mind. I also loved the soft feel of the clouds and the vivid blues in the water.
    Thanks for sharing great work

  22. Allison Prior on Sat, 2nd Aug 2008 1:03 pm

Thank you everyone for your wonderful compliments, I really appreciate it.
To June, Blackhead is in Petty Harbour, not far from St. John’s, Newfoundland.
To Mary, I have been doing acrylics for about 1 year.

I love to paint the rugged shores of Newoudland, it is certainly very interesting.

  25. Ingrid on Sat, 2nd Aug 2008 2:52 pm

    Hi Allison,

Capturing reflections in water is very difficult to do and you did it beautifully! That iceberg is sitting IN THE WATER!!! The colors you used hold the painting together so that it is unified. And to have captured the feeling of COLD……very refreshing for hot August weather!

I have a couple of suggestions for the design of the painting. Your horizon line is in the middle of the painting. Since you have painted the water and iceberg fantastically, less sky and more of the water would give more importance to the iceberg, maybe 1/3 sky and 2/3 water.

The position of Blackhead (the rock) stops midway in your painting. To extend it further across the page and have the iceberg take a bite out of that Blackhead shape would interlock those important shapes in your painting and give more emphasis to the iceberg (which would then be against the dark shape of Blackhead).

Sometimes when painting, we as artists have to change things around a little and rearrange what nature has given us.

Keep up that great emotion and expression in your work!

This painting is so very real looking, great job.

  27. Mary on Sat, 2nd Aug 2008 6:28 pm

AHHHHHHHHH!!!! How refreshing on this HOT-HOT-HOT August afternoon!! Good work on the water. The clouds could be placed more randomly.

    Great Painting!

  28. Kay Price on Sat, 2nd Aug 2008 7:21 pm

Love the water and sky!!! Awesome job!

  29. Tammy on Sat, 2nd Aug 2008 7:32 pm

Great job. Looks like I could dive right off into the clear blue water. I’d probably drown though. (Ha Ha!)

This explains why the art of painting will always be exciting. Each you tell yourself that you have seen all the versions of paintings of Oceans that exist, a new Artist gets you amazed.

Alison, thanks for keeping this true.

    Great Job.

well done allison i love the colours

  33. Allison Prior on Sun, 3rd Aug 2008 10:32 pm

Thanks again guys, I am sitting here reading all your comments and really enjoying them with a smile on my face, I even had to look at my painting a few times when you would point out things I didn’t even notice.
To Ingrid, thank you for your expertise, I will keep those things in mind for my next painting..I never thought about that with the rock behind the iceberg I was just going by the picture I took. Great idea..I get confused on where to put the horizon line sometimes so I just go by the pictures I take on my excursions around Newfoundland. My art teacher said the horizon line is 1/3 down on most paintings, and others say 1/2 way down, I guess it depends on the what is being painted.
To Mary, I can see what you mean with clouds.
I am still learning so all your comments are a great encouragement and help.
If anyone would like a print I could send you one for $40.00..including shipping,
    Thank you again everyone…
    Allison

  35. Ingrid on Mon, 4th Aug 2008 2:02 pm

    Hi Allison,

You are more than welcome! I can only tell you what others before me have taught me! I remember one of my instructors at the American Academy of Art, Bill Parks, always telling me…”More sky or more land, never half in half”. This has stuck with me through the years. It has also helped me to realize that we as artists need to be designers when we paint and often we need to rearrange those shapes that nature has given us even if we SEE otherwise or have taken a photo that shows us otherwise! I always tell my students that the “photo police” will not come and arrest us for NOT copying what is in the photo! This is where our DESIGNER HAT should be put on and used!

Keep practicing, keep painting, and keep growing as an artist! The journey is very exciting!

    Ingrid ;-)

Gorgeous! I love the bright whiteness of the iceberg and the wonderful transparency in the reflection on the water. All the colors beautifully enhance each other.

  39. John on Sun, 10th Aug 2008 2:51 am

I think either the clouds higher or the ice berg higher would improve a nice painting.
