Acrylic Painting Lesson – Keeping it Loose
Here is a free acrylic painting lesson video created by Artist Robert Joyner.
In the beginning of the video, Robert talks about an equation he likes to apply to his painting that I found very interesting. Its a 2:1 equation with 2 parts believable and 1 part imperfect. In Roberts opinion, which I tend to agree with, its the imperfections that make a painting beautiful.
Robert likes to keep his compositions simple and his brushwork loose and abstract which makes for some very interesting paintings. In this particular lesson, his composition is two fishing boats that are docked in downtown Newport News.
The biggest lesson I took away from this video is to not take my painting too seriously. I know that many times I will become intimidated by a particular painting I am working on. I will worry that it may not come out the way I anticipated and its those worries that ultimately ruin the finished product. I think its best to just relax and let go as Robert does in this video. And if it doesn’t come out as good as you had hoped, then put it in the “reject” pile like Robert mentions in the video and paint over it! What a great concept.
Opaque Watercolor Painting Demonstration
About Steve Fleming
Good art is the result of hard work and dedication. It only happens when the artist finds his or her own story to tell and then learns to do so with his or her own unique language.
I am an artist who works in watercolor and acrylic, and I teach both for The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, as well as workshops across the country and abroad. My goal as an artist is to be creative; my goal as a teacher is to help my students learn to interpret the world around them, not to promote the belief the goal of art is the perfect rendering of a subject. One of my core messages: art is a creative process and is not just the sum total of the work we sell. In this era of digital cameras, I caution artists to look — really look both inside and outside — for the subject matter that lights our artistic fires. Otherwise, our work will be lacking everything but technique.
How to Paint an Apple with Oils
This 50 minute lesson introduces the foundational principles of representational art and demonstrates how each one applies specifically to the subject of painting. These four principles (Drawing, Value, Color and Edges) guide every decision that the artist makes during the painting process. This lesson introduces and demonstrates how to use all four principles by painting a simple apple.
Some of the topics that are discussed include: establishing reference points when painting; measuring accurately; thinking in terms of shapes; value relationships; using complimentary colors; warm and cool colors; incorporating a variety of edges within a painting.
Brian Neher is a professional portrait painter whose work has been featured in American Artist Magazine and on national television. He has studied under world renowned portrait painter, Joe Bowler, and his paintings can be seen in both private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

Pastel Painting Demo Step by Step
About Christine Kane
Christine Kane is a pastel and watercolor artist who is inspired by the Midwest landscape and it’s seasons. To find new ideas for her paintings, she hikes in the forest preserves during all seasons.
Christine began drawing at an early age. She focused her education on art and has a degree in Graphic Design. She is continuing her studies and is currently pursuing a degree in Natural Resources.
Translating weather is also evident in her work. “Weather makes a landscape painting come to life. How I love to show leaves blowing in the Autumn time, snow falling in winter, or a beautiful thunderstorm approaching in my summer paintings.”
Christine finds God’s handwork in all aspects of nature and tries to translate her awe and reverence in her artwork. Never disappointed, she relies on His creation for inspiration.
