Watercolor Painting Demonstration by Joe Cartwright

About

I have been painting with watercolor since 1998.

My paintings cover a wide range of subjects including portraits ,seascapes, landscape, flowers, wildlife and townscapes. I do not feel inclined to specialise in any one category as any subject can make an interesting work of art.

I have been exhibiting at regional and National art shows over this period at which I have sold many paintings and received many of awards. In 2009 I won the prestigious John Copes Watercolour Prize.

I have also also exhibited and sold paintings at other major exhibitions such as the Sydney Royal Agricultural Easter Show and the Blacktown Art Show.

The Australian Artist Magazine has published my articles on two occasions.

Karrie uses musicians as her subject in this demonstration, but you do not have to paint the same subject. Pick any subject you want.  It is the process that she uses to complete this painting that she would like you to try.

How to Paint a Landscape Step by Step by Kenn Backhaus

About Kenn Backhaus

Kenn was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin and spent much of his childhood on the family farm near Burnett, Wisconsin. His fondness for nature became the catalyst for his art. Kenn’s parents encouraged his artistic education and following High School, he attended Layton School of Art in Milwaukee,Wisconsin. After graduation from Layton in 1973, he embarked on his professional career in Design and Illustration. As a commercial designer and illustrator Kenn received many awards at both local and national levels, which included acceptance in the Annual Society of Illustrators Show in New York. Although Kenn took pride in his commercial successes, his heart always belonged to the fine art of outdoor painting.

With developing interest in the historic Plein Air style of painting, Kenn decided in 1984, to devote more time to his passion for painting and the love of the outdoors. He found that capturing true color, value and the mood of a subject was best done on location or through direct observation. His passion for painting has broadened his subject matter to include not only landscape, but also figurative, portrait, still life and wildlife.

Kenn’s works have been juried into many shows across the country, including the Oil Painters of America National Shows. His works have received many awards including the Collector’s Choice Award at the Seventh Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational 2005, Artist’s Choice Award at the First Annual Telluride Plein Air Exhibit and Sale, 2004, Fredix Artist Canvas Best Landscape award at the 2004 Oil Painters of America National Show, Kirkland, Washington, Tara Best Landscape award at the 2003 Oil Painters of America National Show, Taos, New Mexico, Second Place Award in the Crystal Cove Invitational Exhibition 2003, 1999 Finalist winner The Artist Magazine, a Best of Show in the 1999 Invitational American Plains Artist Show, Midland, Texas, Award of Excellence in the 1998 Regional Oil Painters of America Show, Arlington Heights, IL.

Flemish Painting Technique – Oil Painting Demonstration

About Nick Warren

I’m a native of Yorkshire, England and live there to this day, still inspired by its grandeur and wealth of different landscapes. I originally trained in graphics and worked as a designer eventually starting my own business. I began using oil paints twenty years ago, teaching myself how to use them through trial and error, reading every manual I could find and picking the brains of more experienced artists I met through art societies and life classes. I still tend to paint like a designer rather than a fine artist. Around seven or eight years ago I began working mainly in oils and used my background and contacts to print greeting cards and the like and with my wife’s help and guidance built up a network of clients. I began taking commissions most of which came about through marketing my printed works and utilising local directories, an underused resource in the age of the internet.

At the end of 2009 I started a website http://www.from-sketch-to-oil-painting.com/ providing free tutorials in drawing and painting. Soon after I was involved in an accident, damaging my shoulder, wrist and hand. This has inevitably slowed me down and I only take on two commissions a year while managing my greeting card business. However, this has provided me with the opportunity to use the time I would have previously spent painting on developing my site.

My hope for my site is that it will develop into a community of artists of all abilities. That some will pick up the pencil and paintbrush for the first time, others will further enhance their art skills and that the accomplished among us will teach us all how to be better artists.

Describe this Piece: This piece was a real challenge to pull off, not only was it a white Tiger, which is anything but white in colour! but it also had a large expanse of water, showing both reflections and also depth in areas. Hopefully you think I have managed to do the subject justice.

Oil Painting Techniques – Glazing

In this post, we will discuss the oil painting technique called “Glazing”. Included below are several videos as well as step by step tutorials and lessons from around the Web, that discuss and demonstrate the Glazing technique.

Glazing is the process of applying a thin layer of translucent or transparent oil paint over a dry opaque layer of oil paint, which creates an effect unlike any other.

Light travels through the transparent or translucent layer of oil paint and bounces off the opaque layer creating a sort of glowing effect that is very difficult to create with other oil painting techniques.

The effect is known as “Optical Color Mixing”.  Colors are not mixed together physically on a palette or canvas, but are instead mixed optically through the various layers of glazes.

Watercolor Painting Techniques – Painting Metal

About John Fisher

I was born and educated in England, graduating from the Luton School of Arts (now Barnfield College) in 1945. It was my hope to become a graphic artist, but at the end of the Second World War returning service men and women had first crack at the few jobs available, and rightly so. I took a number of jobs while I tried to break into my chosen field, and ended up being a reluctant carpenter. Many years passed and I emigrated to Canada in 1952, married a Canadian woman, started a family, and in 1955 finally started on a career which took in graphic arts, owner of my own graphics arts company, art director at an advertising agency, and careers in marketing, advertising and public relations.

I wish I could claim that my passion for art burned brightly throughout those years, but alas, the need to make a living took prominence. As with many people, I always promised myself that when I retired I would get back to painting again. That time came in 1989, when my wife and I were living the winter months in our condo in Destin, Florida. Robert Long, a talented watercolour artist, was offering private lessons from his nearby condo. He was my mentor, and made my retirement years infinitely richer.

In those days Robert taught only technique, and there were rarely more than four to six of us in those early classes. From Robert I regained my interest in photography as an adjunct to painting, and as the cliche goes – I never looked back. I have had many paintings accepted and hung in exhibitions in Florida and Ontario, where I now live. I’ve won some prizes, come first in some exhibitions, and occasionally won the Citizens’ Choice awards. But I mainly paint for fun – hence the choice of name for this site.
