You Asked – Painting Fine Lines

Today’s question comes from Claude:

Claude Writes:

“It seems there are thousands of different brushes on the market. To paint fine lines such as a tiny stem or highlights on flowers and leaves, is there a special technique or brush? Seems ours always come out too coarse. Thanks”

Do you have any information that might help Claude?

Please leave you response in the comments box below.  Thanks!

Wildlife Drawing Step by Step – How To Draw a Cougar

About The Artist

Born (1961) and raised in Michigan artist Pablo Dominguez began drawing around age 4. As a muchacho (Spanish for “youth”), many hours were spent exploring and working outdoors while visiting relatives in a rural area of Mexico with no electricity or running water, but plenty of ranch animals. The Christian artist summarizes his respect for the natural world by stating “I am continually amazed at the beauty, design, and purpose that almighty God has placed into his creation of nature and wildlife. And I don’t say that in a whimsical or trite manner, but rather from an undersanding that the design, complexity, and order we see in all life points to a common designer rather than a common ancestor”. Pablo’s travels across the United States include visits to areas such as Yellowstone National park, South Dakota’s Badlands, Audubon State Park, and the Great Smoky Mountains. His trips to wildlife refuge areas and large and small zoos also allow him many hours of observation and study of wildlife and landscape.

Pablo’s artwork has appeared in Wildlife Art magazine and he is co-author of an instructional art book on painting wildlife in acrylics for Walter Foster Publications. The year 2005 saw his work accepted into the exhibit “Art of the Animal Kingdom X” in Bennington, Vermont, and the following year his painting titled “Brown Bear Brow” won the Henderson Breakfast Lions Club award, one of the top prizes given at the Kentucky National Willdife Art Exhibit. The artist and his wife Charlene share their home with their black lab and several cats, occasionally doing foster care work for a local animal rescue.

Acrylic Painting Tutorial – How To Paint Hands by Leslie Pease

About The Artist

Leslie Pease graduated from UMass Dartmouth with a BFA in illustration, in 1987. After many years of working as a computer graphic artist, she decided to return to her fine art roots. In April, 2002 Leslie began to seriously teach herself how paint. Floundering around for a short while, things started to “click” when Leslie fell into Portraits and Still Lifes. That was Fall, 2002 and she has not let the brushes dry since.

Karrie on Canvas – Abstract Floral Painting Demonstration

Here is another full episode of the program “Karrie on Canvas” with artist Karrie Evenson. In this episode, Karrie demonstrates her loose and spontaneous techniques by creating an abstract floral piece in acrylics. I really enjoy Karrie’s style as she teaches you to just let go and enjoy yourself.

A big thanks to the folks over at Jones Television for sharing this video. You can see more of the great programming over at their YouTube Channel Here.

Skin Tone Drawing Demonstration With Pastel Pencils

Here is a two part pastel drawing video by artist Colin Bradley. In this video tutorial, Colin demonstrates his process for creating flesh tones in his portraits.

Its important to note that every artist has his or her own way of doing things.  This process is by no means the only way to draw a portrait with pastels.  This is just Colin’s method.

Colin begins by adding a generous amount of white to his sketch.  Using a circular motion with his finger, he blends the white pastel right into the paper.

He then begins to lay in his other colors in layers, blending along the way and creating his lights and darks. He continues this process, using nearly a dozen different colors, until the drawing is complete.  The end result is a beautiful pastel portrait.  Draw this portrait along with Colin and see what you can come up with.  Enjoy!

Soft Focus Watercolor Painting Technique

Here is a very interesting Watercolor Painting Technique video by artist Elizabeth Fluehr.  This is a technique that you don’t see often and a somewhat unconventional usage of the Watercolor painting medium.  Most of the water that she uses with this technique is for the purpose of wetting the paper and not added to the paint itself.  She only uses a small amount of water to lightly dampen her brush.

The name of this technique is called the “Soft Focus” technique and you will understand why it was given this name after watching the video.

Elizabeth begins by saturating a piece of  140lb Arches Watercolor Paper with water.  The paper is then allowed to sit for some time until it loses its shiny appearance.

Blick Art Lesson – Exciting Acrylic Painting Technique

The following is an acrylic painting technique that you probably have not seen before. I never did until today. This is a very interesting approach to working with acrylic paint.

In the video below, a representative of Blick Art Materials takes advantage of the strong, flexible, quick drying properties of acrylic paint to create some very interesting works of art.

She first lays out a layer of acrylic paint over some parchment paper. It is allowed to dry for 48hrs.It is then easily peeled from the parchment paper, leaving you with a flexible piece of dried paint from which to work from.

From this point, the possibilities are endless as you will see after watching the video below. Everything from mosaics to jewelry can be created. And with the addition of various mediums, even more interesting things can be done. Pretty cool stuff! Enjoy!

Oil Paint Review – Chroma Archival Oils

Chroma Archival OilsI recently started using a new brand of Oil Paints called Chroma Archival Oils. I like these paints so much that I thought I would do a short review post.  I started using these oils after hearing about them in a home study course called Mastering Color by Richard Robinson.

Chroma Archival Oils are a fairly new addition to the oil painting industry. They first gained popularity in Australia and were later introduced to the United States in the early 1990′s. Since that time, they are becoming more and more popular so I just had to see what this craze was all about.

As much as I love oil paints, they do have a big flaw. They tend to become rather brittle and crack over time. This is because oil paints become less flexible as they dry. To overcome this flaw, Archival Oils introduced a new kind of oil that has been modified with a synthetic material making the paint more flexible.
