About Doug
Doug Purdon was born in Toronto, Ontario. He is a full-time painter, teacher and writer. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and Ontario Society of Artists. He currently lives in Toronto with his wife, the writer Rosemary Aubert.
He exhibits his work in galleries in Canada, the US and the UK and his paintings are in many private and corporate collections, including The Toronto Public Library, The City of Toronto, The Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, Sears Canada, and The Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic CT, where his painting Tugboat Alley was awarded the Museum Purchase Award in 2005. A major retrospective of his work was held in October 2007 at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto.
Doug believes that artists should continue the tradition of passing on their skills and knowledge to other artists and does this through his workshops, seminars and writing. He currently teaches courses at Loyalist College, Belleville, Ontario; Bridgewater Retreat, Tweed, Ontario; and the School of Continuing Studies, University of Toronto and in workshops for art associations across Canada.
While he paints his native Ontario, he also enjoys travelling to different locations and has painted in Scotland, England, France, and the American Southwest and on the eastern and western seaboard of North America. He is represented by Studio 737, Tweed, Ontario; Arnold Fine Art, Newport RI; and the Gallery at Mystic Seaport, Mystic CT.
Basic Oil Painting Materials For Beginners and Purchasing Tips
Deciding to practice the art of oil painting was a great one, but now you’re faced with what you need to buy in order to get started. Oil painting materials can be very expensive and a vast majority of materials to choose from. This materials list will carry you long into your early years of painting and is budget conscious.
Choosing a good easel can be difficult. But the most important characteristic is that it is STURDY! When I got started oil painting, I did not have the money to buy the kind of easel I needed. So I went to the local home fix it store and bought an 8 by 4 sheet of ¾ inch plywood for about $15.00. I put it up against a wall in my basement and put some support screws at the top of the board and into the ceiling joist and instant easel! The reason why it works so perfectly is that it’s big, so you can put up any size canvas, and it does not get much sturdier than that!
You also never had to adjust anything, because you put the canvas where you want it. This brings me to the next important note though. I staple gun my canvas to the easel flat and stretch them after the painting is done. That’s another reason why the sheet of plywood worked so well. I have used it for years and years and painted many paintings on it, so I have gotten my $15.00 out of it.

Amazing Landscape Painting Demo by Artist Maxim Grunin
I often browse around YouTube and other video sharing websites in search of new talent to post here on my blog. Today I hit the motherload! The following is a two part video demonstration of a landscape by the amazingly talented artist Maxim Grunin. I was in absolute awe when I watched Maxim create this work of art in what seems like a matter of hours. When you see the finished product you will be amazed as well. The finished painting looks as though it took months or even years to create. It looks so complicated but Maxim makes it look so easy. I think we can all learn a thing or two from this artist. I do hope you enjoy this demonstration as much as I did and I hope this inspires you to create something as equally amazing as this.

Oil Painting Technique – How To Tone a Canvas
Toning Your Canvas For Oil Painting
Learn the proper way to tone your canvas in preparation for oil paints with this free video demonstration. Toning your canvas before beginning a painting is a very popular oil painting technique, but there is definitely a right and a wrong way to do it. In the following video, artist Don Stewart demonstrates his method for toning his canvas before he completes a painting. Don combines a mixture of medium and solvent to his oil paint to get it nice and thin before applying it to his canvas. After allowing that to dry for several minutes, he then wipes away the excess with a clean rag. The result is a nicely toned canvas with a luminous quality to it.
