Colored Pencil Tutorial By Paula Pertile
About Paula:
I was born and raised in Sacramento, CA, USA, where it gets very very very HOT in the Summer. WAY too hot. I played the piano, took tap dancing lessons, did my homework, and spent a lot of time sitting directly in front of the air conditioner.
I always liked to ‘color’, and in the third grade I won a coloring contest sponsored by a local coffee shop. My prize was a banana split, a bank radio and FIVE whole dollars.
WOW!
You could make money just for coloring? The seed was planted.

Artist Spotlite – Robert Reynolds
Artist: Robert Reynolds
Location: Clinton, Tennessee
Medium: Colored Pencil
Dimensions: 22″ x14″
Support: Poster Board
Comments From the Artist: I’m a 70 year old retired carpenter/cabinet maker and factory worker. Presently living in Clinton, Tennessee, inflicted with end-stage emphysema. It progressively got worse in 2006 to the point where I am unable to do much of anything, except return to pencil drawing, which I haven’t done for some 20 or 30 years. At least I can still do that .
I’ve drawn over 400 No.2/HB pencil drawings since starting again in 2006. I was considered legally blind in 2007, but with cateract surgery and implantation of artificial lens in both eyes, I now see better than I ever have in my liife. I didn’t do much of any drawing in 2007 from the disability. I was introduced to Prismacolor pencils by a very fine artist on-line and bought a set and started using them as well, occasionally.
This drawing is my drawing of William Adolphe Bouguereau’s 1887 “Fardeau Agreable” or “Not too much to Carry”. I drew it on a piece of poster board 22″ x14′ to keep my expense down as I’m on fixed income of Social Security. I admire Bouguereau’s work so very much that I’ve done quite a few of his fine works….
How to Get the Most Out of your Oil Painting
Learning how to become a good oil painter is a difficult undertaking. In fact, it is more than likely one of the most difficult painting mediums to master. Things like color mixing & theory, perspective, techniques and materials can really intimidate a beginner artist.
So how do you get the most out of your oil painting and become a more accomplished artist?
You must make it a point to learn the fundamentals of oil painting, practice often and have an enormous amount of patience.
You must start with the fundamentals of oil painting first. You cannot expect to produce Rembrandt quality paintings in the beginning. In fact, the first paintings you produce will probably be a lot worse than you may have anticipated. Frustration will more than likely come into the picture (pun intended). They key is to learn from your mistakes and do not let them defeat you.
You Asked – Applying Glazes….
Today’s question comes from Roy and he asks:
“Currently I am using acrylic paint to do wild life and was looking for some helpful tips on applying glazes to large areas (say 9″ high by 36″ wide) and still maintain a uniform colour throughout the entire area. Can this be achieved with certain brushes, rollers, etc. Small size areas don’t seem to pose a problem, however, larger ones do, I want to avoid brush strokes and want to creat a uniform colour. If anyone could help that would be great!”
Do you have any information that might help Roy?

How to Paint Darks and Shadows in Watercolor by Mara Mattia
About Mara
I enjoy being an artist! And I’ve been at it longer than this internet blogging stuff. In fact, blogging is all new to me! So I will start by telling you a little about myself. Our nest is not quite empty because we still enjoy the presence of our college-aged kids at home. And because they are busy with work and school I am able to enjoy uninterrupted painting sessions during the day-light hours instead of in the middle of the night like I did when they were little. A bit here, a bit there and I keep my projects alive! One project I’m working on is a cookbook. Originally written for my husband and children, I re-structure classic recipes we love, to make them healthier. I’m also writing and illustrating a series of children’s books. Finding time to Draw, paint, and teach has been a challenge while raising a family but finishing a project is very rewarding to me. And I hope you like my artwork and lessons and enjoy watching my progress with various projects!

Comments from the Artist: I recently discovered ball pen as my art medium. I build up colors by cross hatching method. I find this very interesting and exciting as every line has to be the final one. No correction possible thereafter. I would like to have your valuable comments on my work. Thanks.
